Handel Flute Sonatas

Handel Sonatas CD

Featuring

Layton James — harpsichord
Julia Bogorad — flute
Charles Ullery — bassoon

Full Harmonic Media Group is proud to present two very different but equally spectacular CD's by internationally-renowned virtuoso flutist Julia Bogorad-Kogan, Principal Flutist of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

About the Album

If you think you’ve heard the Handel Flute Sonatas, you are in for a surprise. Handel expected the performers of his day to ornament the solo lines and improvise the accompaniment, using his bass line and chord symbols as a guide. In an astonishing feat of interpretation, modern-day scholar, improviser, and virtuoso performer Layton “Skip” James has created an imaginative telescope into the eighteenth century. And, as would have been done in Handel's time, the bassoon is used for the bass-line instrument. No bassoonist will want to miss hearing Charles Ullery's breath-taking performance. “Spectacular” is the only word to describe the result of three virtuoso players and their creativity illuminating anew these famous pieces.

The New York Times called Julia Bogorad-Kogan “a wonderful flutist — her playing is graceful, virtuosic, and always full of interest.” Winner of a Grammy Award for best recording of chamber music, Bogorad became a principal flutist of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra at the age of 22. She has combined an orchestral career with frequent solo and recital appearances in major music capitals. As a concerto soloist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, she is heard frequently on National Public Radio, and has performed on the nationally- syndicated radio show St. Paul Sunday. She has appeared at the Marlboro, Ravinia, and Grand Teton Music Festivals, and served as acting principal flutist of the Boston Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Acclaimed as a teacher, she taught at Oberlin Conservatory, and is currently on the faculty of the University of Minnesota School of Music. Her teachers included Marcel Moyse, Thomas Nyfenger, Robert Willoughby, and James Pellerite.
